Hey Cap this game series always interests me because they kinda remind me of Soul Reaver for some reason so tho I'm still only on PS4 I really wanna play these games eventually!
From your experience tho what are these games play? Are they old school in a sense that they're like PS1/PS2 era action adventure games or are they closer to Soulslike you think?
Thank you bro.
The games are all rooted in hack and slash, have puzzles and areas that'll make you think a little, "secret" extra bosses that will challenge you more so than the story ones and are all intertwined plot wise. There's a few bits that seperate them:
1 is a classic hack and slash with a more bruiser type character. Upgrade your abilites and weapons as you progress etc. Simple fun gameplay and mechanics.
2 builds on that with a faster, more technical character, who you can build different ways with the introduction of rpg mechanics and loot, whereas 1 would just have you linearly become stronger. Also adds to the traversal and item mechanics.
3 takes away the rpg loot system, and moves the game to more a soulslike experience. Nowhere near a game like Elden Ring, you can still hack and slash but it's way more punishing and definitely leans towards a more tactical playstyle.
Genesis is a spin off to the series, and uses a top-down camera rather than the 3rd person in the main trilogy. Still action/adventure style with really nice atmosphere and dungeons. Well worth a play if you're a fan of the others.
Hope that covers everything without spoiling too much
